There’s a question I keep sitting with, one that started as a quiet thought and has slowly become something closer to a conviction: what if Agile coaches are already halfway to being AI governance professionals and most of them don’t know it yet? Agile coaches spend their careers doing something genuinely rare, walking into organizations mid-transformation, reading the room and helping teams change how they work without losing what makes them function.
AI governance asks for exactly that same skill, just pointed at a different kind of change. Because AI governance isn’t really a compliance activity bolted onto a business. It’s a transformation, as sweeping as any Agile rollout ever was and it’s happening across every industry at once, whether organizations are ready for it or not.
Here’s the part that convinces me this isn’t a stretch, but a natural next step: the ceremonies Agile coaches already run are, almost structurally, governance checkpoints in disguise.
Sprint planning is where a team decides what to build next, which is precisely where a risk assessment belongs, before the work even starts, not after.
A sprint review, where the team shows what was delivered, is functionally an audit, a moment to check whether what shipped matches what was promised, and whether it behaved the way it should have.
A retrospective, that sacred space where teams ask “what should we do differently,” is nothing short of continuous governance improvement when you point it at AI systems instead of just team dynamics.
And backlog refinement, the ongoing act of asking “does this still make sense, and what could go wrong”, is an impact assessment in every way that matters, just without the label. None of this requires an Agile coach to learn an entirely new language. It requires them to notice they’re already speaking it.
So, I don’t think Agile coaches start from zero when they consider a move into AI governance. I think they’re starting from further ahead than almost anyone else in the room, because while a policy specialist has to learn how organizations actually behave under pressure, an Agile coach already knows. What’s left to build is the regulatory vocabulary, the frameworks, the specific language of EU AI Act obligations or ISO 42001 clauses, real work, but learnable work, layered on top of an instinct for organizational change that took years to earn.
